MICHAEL Hibberd says he would relish the opportunity to become an official leader at the club in 2018.

After an outstanding first season with Melbourne, after crossing from Essendon last year, Hibberd said he aspired to step-up into the club’s leadership group next year.

“I think so. At the start, I just wanted to fit in and not tread on anyone’s toes or tell anyone what to do. I just wanted to earn the group’s respect. I think I’ve done that this year and I see potential in an actual leadership role,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“I’ve already adopted a bit of that over the year and it’s only going to get stronger now that I know the group really well. I’m just going to be me and leading is part of that.”

Reflecting on his first year at the club, Hibberd said coach Simon Goodwin had thrived being a head coach.

“I knew he was a great coach and a good operator, but probably didn’t think that he was as good as he actually is,” he said.

“The messages he sends his players are clear and direct and he knows what makes us tick. He’s a good people person and he knows how to get the most out his players so I knew he was a great coach and this year was no different.

“We let him down in the end with not making finals but I’m sure at the start of the pre-season, he’ll be in for a big one for us.”

In terms of players Hibberd was impressed with this year, he nominated three players who really caught his eye.

“Alex Neal-Bullen really surprised me. I didn’t know a lot about him before I got to the club, but the way he trains and his performances this year were very consistent. He’s going to be a valuable player for us going forward,” he said.

“Jayden Hunt was good to play with in the backline. Once he develops a bit of a leadership role and has a bit more voice, his talent his endless and he could be a real A-grader of the competition.

“I really love playing with Neville Jetta. I knew he was a tough character, but the way he performed all year, every game, you just know what you’re going to get from him. He’s a real competitor and I think everyone just loves playing with him. I wouldn’t say I’m surprised about Nev but I can’t sing his praises high enough.”
