A NEW-look forward line could be part of Melbourne’s longer term plans, if the inclusions continue to bring their team style of play, says coach Simon Goodwin.

Speaking post-match after his side’s 36-point win over Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Goodwin said 11 goals from four players who didn’t play last round – Bayley Fritsch (three), Mitch Hannan (three), Tom McDonald (two) and Charlie Spargo (two) – were critical in gaining the four points.

Goodwin praised first-gamer Spargo and said McDonald was strong after returning for the first time this season, from a foot injury.

“They (the forwards) performed in a way that they’re putting their hand up for selection every week and I thought they functioned realty well together,” he said.

“That’s all they can do. We play people who are in form and compete, and want to do the things for the team.”

On McDonald, Goodwin said it was a win for the club’s fitness and medical staff.

“I think that’s brilliant for our high-performance team,” he said.

“To have Tom McDonald come off eight weeks without playing, really, and to build a program in his rehab, and to train and play the way he did – I think it’s a credit to our high performance staff, who have done a great job, because he’s giving us great flexibility on the day.”

Although Goodwin was delighted with his attack, he was equally pleased with his side’s backline, particularly warrior Neville Jetta.

“He was incredible today, Nev. He won a lot of critical contests in one-on-one situations. He got over to help his teammates at really critical moments, so without question, that’s Nev, when he’s at his best,” he said.

“I didn’t think he was alone today, down back. I thought all of the defenders started to really contribute.

“I thought Oscar McDonald has been in terrific form for the majority of the season and Jake Lever continues to grow and get better from last week to this week. We identified Oscar as a key defender ... I don’t think he’s been beaten too often.”

Goodwin said co-captain Nathan Jones was another to shine.

“Nathan’s been terrific for a lot of the year. His stuff around the contest was outstanding,” he said.

Meanwhile, Goodwin said Christian Petracca was set to play against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium next Sunday, after he suffered an infected finger, courtesy of a dog bite.

“The dog bite, yes, [we’re] looking forward to getting him back. Interesting circumstances to lose a player, but he’s an important player for us – we all know that. He’ll be back next week,” he said.

And co-captain Jack Viney (foot) is now expected to be two weeks away from playing his first match of the season.

“He’s a couple of weeks away, but he’s really progressing well in his preparation,” Goodwin said.

“We’re putting a fair bit of load into him at the moment and giving him the best chance to play the rest of the season.”
