UTILITY Cam Pedersen played a crucial role in the Casey Demons qualifying final victory on Saturday and says he is enjoying being a part of the club’s success.

The Demons smashed Geelong by 91 points at Casey Fields to advance to the preliminary final, with 12-Melbourne listed players performing well in the win.

“I think in previous years it has probably been a bit of a stigma where you know you’re playing twos and sometimes you can come with not a great attitude,” Pedersen told Melbourne Media.

“But this year the ability to make that ‘one club’ has been really important.”

Although there are regular changes to the Casey line-up, Pedersen said the constant interruptions faced by the AFL-aligned club aren’t effecting the Demons’ performances.

“I think it’s the old saying, ‘one soldier goes out, another one comes in’,” he said.

“The program that Casey has got down here it doesn’t matter who comes in, I think they’ve got a great attitude and all we want is for people to have a crack and everyone is doing that at the moment.”

The even contributions by all players across the board was a massive factor in the thumping victory, highlighting the connection between Melbourne and Casey, and the focus on working together.

“Jade (Rawlings) has been really big at sniffing out if there’s anyone getting ahead of themselves and I think it’s been really good this year as well – it’s such a tight knit group,” Pedersen said.

“It was great that all the Melbourne staff and all the Melbourne players got down to come and watch us, which I think is really important.”

Casey kicked the opening seven goals of the match against Geelong, blowing the Cats away with its high-pressure play.

“Rawlings went through that sometimes you need to play ugly,” Pedersen said.

“But we think our ugly game is beautiful.

“So we like to get a lot of numbers around the ball and win the contest, and then our offense flows from that.”

Pedersen was the beneficiary of Casey’s constant attack, slotting four goals in a great individual effort.

“It’s always good to kick a goal and I think the important part was we took marks but we also gave handballs where we could have kicked goals,” he said.

“And then everyone feels good about themselves.”

The 31-year-old has been used in a variety of roles throughout 2018, playing as a key forward, defender and ruckman on occasion.

Casey effectively used Pedersen, Tim Smith and Mykelti Lefau in tandem to compete with Cat Zac Smith in the ruck on Saturday.

“I love playing forward, getting to run and jump at the ball,” Pedersen said.

“Tim Smith did a really good job and so did Kelts (Lefau) playing in the ruck, and I just chipped in for about five minutes a quarter.”

Pedersen also had 25 disposals, six tackles and eight marks in a complete perform
