JAKE Melksham says a career-best five goals was the icing on the cake of “a great day”, as Melbourne recorded a whopping 109-point win over Carlton at the MCG.

Speaking post-match to Melbourne Media, Melksham said there were plenty of positives to emerge from the red and blue’s win.

“When we got a considerable lead, we looked to really put them (Carlton) away, like we did against Gold Coast last week, and we were able to do that,” he said.

“As a team, it wasn’t just me that performed up forward – it was Tommy Mac (Tom McDonald), Alex Neal-Bullen and also the mids … and the defenders were awesome today,” he said.

“We kicked 25 goals [in a match], which the club hasn’t done since 2004, so it was really good to play a game like that – and put a side away like we did. To have a spread of goalkickers was awesome.

“When we had a five-goal lead at half-time, to come away and win by another 10 goals was really pleasing. Putting a side to the sword was what we want to do, when we get up and I think everyone was able to join in, in the end, and have a bit of fun.”

Melksham, who played his best AFL game, which included 14 contested possessions, from 21 disposals, said his confidence grew throughout the game.

“I was lucky enough to get on the end of a few, which was nice. Anytime where you kick a couple of goals it lifts you, especially when you get one early – that gets you going,” he said.

“It gives you good confidence. Confidence is something that comes and goes in your game, but as long as you believe, I think you’re in good stead.

“I’ve been chipping away all year and there have been a few games, where I’ve kicked a lot of points, and it could’ve quite easily been turned around and today was just one of those days, where you need a bit of luck and I got that.”
