KEY forward Chris Dawes is getting closer to a return to the AFL, according to coach Paul Roos.

Dawes, who did not play his first game of football this year until three weeks ago in the VFL (round seven equivalent), has been named an emergency for Melbourne’s clash against Port Adelaide at TIO Traeger Park Oval.

Roos said Dawes’ 22 disposals and three goals in Casey’s win over Box Hill Hawks last weekend were particularly eye-catching.

“I was really pleased with his game last week. He’s another one who is creeping up and getting close [to selection],” he said.

“I loved his game [for Casey last round] – his third week back.

“At the moment, it’s a matter of, if you win last week, it’s hard to make changes. You’ve got two guys coming in with different roles – Nev’s (Jetta) a defender and Dom’s (Tyson) a midfielder. He’s certainly getting very close.”

Roos said Melbourne’s third match for premiership points in Alice Springs was a great opportunity to see where his side is at.

“This week is another really good test,” he said.

“This (Port Adelaide) is an experienced footy team that two years ago was one kick away from a Grand Final.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the team play and how they can respond after last week’s [63-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG].”
