First quarter: Carlton 6.2 (38) to Melbourne 1.2 (8)

Carlton dominated the first term, booting six goals to one.

Andrew Walker got the ball rolling with the first major in the opening minute and by quarter-time, the Blues led by 30 points.

Jack Grimes was Melbourne’s only goalkicker for the term.

Second quarter: Carlton 10.2 (62) to Melbourne 2.3 (15)

Melbourne’s poor first quarter form continued in the second term, when Carlton again controlled the match.

Although it took 11 minutes before the first goal of the term was registered, courtesy of Andrejs Everitt, it was the start of four in a row for Carlton, resulting in a 53-point lead.

It wasn’t until the 27-minute mark, when Chris Dawes converted, that Melbourne had its second goal for the day. At half-time, the Blues led by 47 points.

Third quarter: Carlton 11.3 (69) to Melbourne 6.8 (44)

Carlton jumped back out to a 53-point lead after Walker booted his fourth to open the second half.

But the Demons managed to find some form, and control much of the third term, booting four in a row, via Nathan Jones, Jack Watts, Ben Newton and Jeff Garlett. Christian Salem almost made it five in succession just before three quarter-time, yet his shot on the run hit the post.

At the final break, the Dees were back in the contest, trailing by 24 points.

Final quarter: Carlton 12.6 (78) d Melbourne 7.13 (55)

Melbourne got off to the start it wanted in the final term, when Max Gawn kicked truly to help reduce the margin to 17 points.

Although the Demons were right back in the hunt, goals soon dried up and when Carlton’s Patrick Cripps kicked his second, the Blues held on for victory.

In the end, the Blues won by 23 points.
