MELBOURNE’S second heavy defeat to West Coast this season, its poor run in Perth continues and some PBs for a couple of Demons were among the stats to emerge in round 22’s ‘By the numbers’ …

  • Melbourne dropped its ninth match in a row. It plays North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium next round and will be aiming to avoid 10 straight losses.
  • The Demons have still not won in Western Australia since round 11, 2004 when they defeated Fremantle. Melbourne’s most recent victory over West Coast at Patersons Stadium was in round 19, 2002.
  • Melbourne’s two heaviest defeats this season have been against West Coast. The Demons lost to the Eagles by 93 points in round two at the MCG and on Saturday night at Patersons Stadium by 66 points. The 66-point margin also happened against Geelong in round 17 at the MCG.
  • Melbourne won the final quarter against West Coast by five points. It also lost the second term by just eight points, after losing the opening quarter by 30 points and the third by 33 points. Combining the second and final terms, Melbourne lost by just three points. But the Demons were beaten by 54 points, when adding the first and third quarters.
  • West Coast had more than double the scoring shots: 29 to 13.
  • The Demons had more disposals (365 to 342), contested possessions (129 to 116) and uncontested possessions (239 to 222) than West Coast.
  • Mark Jamar (25 hit outs) and Max Gawn (18) had more than West Coast duo Dean Cox (19) and Scott Lycett (18). Overall, Melbourne had 46 hit outs to 39.
  • Jack Fitzpatrick was the only multiple goalkicker for the Demons, booting two goals. The Eagles had four players kick more than one goal: Josh Kennedy (four), Mark LeCras (four), Jack Darling (three) and Josh Hill (two).
  • In his 150th AFL match, Bernie Vince had a game-high 34 disposals. He had two more touches than West Coast’s Chris Masten and was the only Demon to claim 30 disposals or more. Vince also had a match-best 16 contested possessions.
  • Rohan Bail had an equal career-best 24 disposals. It was the third time he has had 24 touches in a match, along with his efforts against Adelaide in round seven, 2011 and against Carlton in round nine, 2012. Viv Michie also achieved a PB, notching up 23 disposals in just his sixth AFL match – and his fifth for the Demons.
