JACK Trengove says the opportunity to watch sister Jess compete in the marathon for Australia – and win the bronze medal – in the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was a moment he’ll never forget.

Trengove, whose season ended from round five, due to a foot injury, turned the disappointment of missing the rest of the 2014 season into a positive by traveling overseas and supporting Jess in Scotland, as he explained.

“It was huge. It was a great opportunity for me to go over and watch her compete in such a big meet and big event, which I’d never had the opportunity to do before. I was thankful for the club to allow me to do that,” he told Dee TV.

“To go over there and watch her win a bronze medal was incredible. I was so excited to be over there and to be part of the whole experience.

“It was pretty surreal to be honest. We didn’t have high expectations for her, while we were over there and she wasn’t really sure what to expect either, going into it.

“We were at the start line and watched her go and she was cruising around and sitting in fifth place and we thought ‘top five would be an amazing achievement’. Then she kept pegging them back and ended up with a bronze – it was great.”

Trengove also got to visit the athletes’ village and meet several stars, which he said was a great experience.

“Just being part of the whole Commonwealth Games and seeing some elite athletes doing what they do, and seeing them face to face, was a pretty incredible experience,” he said.

“I learned a lot through her as well.”

Before Trengove watched Jess compete, he also travelled around parts of Europe, including Stockholm, Prague and Budapest, during his time away from the club.

“The best part about it was the weather and messaging the boys back here. They’re sitting in 10 degrees and they’re a bit miserable. I was sitting in 30 degrees and sunshine, so I can’t really complain with that,” he said with a smile.

“It was a huge life experience over there, seeing different countries and seeing how different things work – the history behind some of the countries I went to were amazing, so I really enjoyed it.

“I definitely want to go back again one day.”
