JACK Viney says the reason for Melbourne’s first win of the season over Carlton at the MCG on Saturday was due to a total team effort.

Viney said “everyone played their role” and it wasn’t left to a handful to drag the team over the line.

“We’d been training our game plan all pre-season and we went out against Richmond and did exactly what Roosy had been teaching us – and we won,” he told 1116 Sen on Monday.

“[Things] slowly started to fall away back into old habits and watching the game against West Coast a couple of weeks ago, I felt it was exactly like watching last year’s performances.

“There was a big emphasis on getting back to our structures and getting back to what Roosy instilled in us during the pre-season and it worked.”

Viney, who has played the past two matches for the Demons, after an interrupted pre-season, was one of Melbourne’s best against the Blues. He said his second AFL win from 15 AFL matches was something he cherished.

Viney added that coach Paul Roos had taken a conservative approach with his return from injury, which had proved beneficial.

“It was very frustrating watching the boys not being able to perform and there were a couple of opportunities … we could’ve won a couple of games,” he said.

“Roosy said right from the ‘get go’ he was taking the expectations off me, along with all of the other young boys, so he was in no rush to play me and he made sure I was fit.

“I did have a bit of an interrupted pre-season, so I worked really, really hard and was putting in extra sessions and just trying to get my fitness up as quick as I could, so Roosy could get me in the team and I could help the boys.”
