A memorial service for former Club director, Peter Hayes QC, who passed away on 21 May, was held in the Grey-Smith Room on the evening of Thursday, 7 June.

Attended by a number of Melbourne Football Club identities, including past and present board members in Beverley O’Connor, Gary Hardeman and Stephen Bickford, the gathering commemorated the brilliant barrister who was described by MC and lifetime friend, Peter Kennedy, as a ‘larrikin at heart’.  Born on 30 October 1948, Hayes was schooled at Carey, Scotch and Monash.

Hayes’ dedication to the Club and those closest to him was clearly displayed, with his most treasured possessions on display at the wake – a photo of his family, including children Will, Sarah and Jane – and a framed Garry Lyon ‘Team of the Century’ guernsey.

Hayes will long be remembered as a giant of the Victorian bar, and also for his service to the Melbourne Football Club over many years.
