VFLW skipper Sammie Johnson and her team are on the brink of history.

As they approach the last four rounds of the rebel VFLW season, a maiden finals series appearance is on the cards for Casey's women's team.

Melbourne Media spoke with Johnson to talk about the expectations for the remainder of the season, how the Demons have turned their form around, the feeling of where this season could go, and how Johnson is going with captaining the team.

“I definitely think we’ll take the good old cliche approach of one week at a time,” Johnson said when discussing the expectations over the remaining four games.

“I say that because we are focusing on the brand of footy we want to deliver week in, week out and how we adapt each week.

“We put our focus into each game as it comes, however, the expectation is we continue our good form as we hope to go into the finals with a lot of healthy wins and give ourselves the best opportunity to take it as far as we can.”

After Round 6, the Demons were sitting fifth on the ladder with three wins and three losses. Equal on points with the Southern Saints and Carlton who were respectively sitting sixth and seventh, and with the prospect of playing the next four games away, the season could have gone either way for Casey.

The Demons though put in the hard work, and are now enjoying the fruits of their labour.

“A lot of it came down to having consistency in the group, it was obviously challenging in the first part of the season not always having Pete (Mercoulia) there to coach us,” Johnson said.

“I don’t think it impacted us too much as we were certainly trying to build a brand of football for the season, it was just hard to implement through some stages of games.

It’s been really good though to see how much the group has grown, as we’ve been challenged a lot and worked on our ball movement during games.

“Once we started to see that come together against Box Hill, we just realised how effective we can be when we move the ball the way we want to.

“It’s also been nice to have the AFLW girls come into the side as well to add that little bit extra experience and they’re having a good impact on the side.”

For the first time in the short history of VFLW, the Casey Demons will be making their debut finals appearance. It is an achievement that Johnson and her teammates set out to target early on.

“It’s definitely exciting,” Johnson said.

“It was an achievement that we set ourselves at the start of the year that we could make finals and we believed that from the start.

“We are focusing on our brand of football and how to execute that to the best of our ability because we play really well when we do, and there is definitely a lot of excitement around the group.

“We certainly have a challenge ahead as well, and as the weeks move on we keep embracing that challenge and hopefully good fortune goes our way.”

In her first year as captain Johnson has certainly let her leadership shine through via her actions on the field, and she is very much enjoying leading a great group of women.

“I like to lead by example in terms of training sessions going in with the intent of having a good session and also out on the field, not only doing the basics well but also those little one-percenters,” she said.

“I’ve actually enjoyed the challenge and loved the experience so far as I have never captained a club before.

“When I was announced (as captain) I was actually doubting myself a little bit and my capability (to lead a club).

“However, the group have been so supportive of me and I’m really lucky in that sense that I feel really connected to the group. They really respect me and are a really easy group to lead.”

Now sitting fourth on the ladder with sevens wins - including winning the last four on the trot - Johnson and her team are positioned only one game behind second-placed Geelong.

The possibilities are endless for the Demons and it will be exciting to see what the rest of the season and the finals series has in store for Casey.
