AFTER a one-point Round 2 victory, it was Melbourne’s post-match performance that drew the most attention last weekend.

With three debutants in the side, the Demons were eager to celebrate the win over Carlton, following milestone man Neville Jetta down the race and into the rooms.

As the shower began for Harley Bennell, Luke Jackson and Trent Rivers, the Dees started singing the song in the rooms, but there was a problem: a few teammates were missing.

“About half-way through the song I realised,” Steven May said after training on Tuesday.

“Because we’re not in a big circle anymore, you know, everyone was sort of spread out, jumping around and didn’t really notice.”

As the rendition of ‘It’s a Grand Old Flag’ came to an end, Max Gawn, Adam Tomlinson, Ed Langdon and Jayden Hunt strolled into the rooms.

“I think Maxy and that were maybe doing some media commitments,” May said.

“We started the song, then realised, so then we started singing it again when Maxy came in.

"It’s a non-issue. We had fun; we’ve moved on – I think it’s a bit more getting spoken about than it needs to be."

- Steven May

The four Demons who missed the initial song weren’t fazed, but outsiders were.

Media personnel have been attempting to link the little mishap with a lack of maturity and leadership among the group, but May says that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“I can see how it looks on the outside, but it was an honest mistake,” he said.

“It wasn’t anyone trying to leave the captain out.

“It was about half-way through [that we noticed]. James Harmes was jumping around with the GoPro and stuff, so we just let him ride the little wave he was on.”
