MELBOURNE veteran Jordan Lewis says the 2019 season certainly isn’t over for the red and blue, as he still has plenty of belief in his side’s ability to turn the year around.

Undoubtedly, the Demons have had an underwhelming campaign to date, but the 33-year-old is no stranger to these testing circumstances.

“As a player, you’re always trying to draw on experience, and I’ve been in this position before – in 2010 we (Hawthorn) were one (win) and five (losses) funnily enough,” Lewis said on the club’s Inside Melbourne podcast.

“And we came out of that to make finals.”

Lewis is fully aware the Dees are a long way off the mark, currently sitting 18^th on the AFL ladder, but he feels the club took a step forward against Richmond in Round 6.

“I think from a playing point of view what we felt on the weekend and what we’ve reviewed is we’re not too far away,” he said.

“A 40-point loss sounds big, but the way we review the game is as in-depth as anyone out there.

“We felt like we just need to make a few better decisions around the ground - with the ball and without the ball.”

While the entire club is disappointed with the current situation, the Demons are keeping the faith, with the hope of creating something special this season.

“I think any player remains optimistic,” Lewis said.

“There are clearly people out there that have written us off, but when you’re inside the club and you’re training every day … any player in here remains optimistic that we can turn it around.”

Melbourne will face Lewis’ former side Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday, and despite the external noise, the defender said his side will carry plenty of belief into the game.

“Internally we remain optimistic and people might think that’s bizarre, but that’s where we sit,” he said.

“We’re one (win) and five (losses) obviously, but we don’t think this year is finished in any sense.

“We come to training today and every single day trying to get better, and trying to stay in the moment, and trying to get ourselves back on track.”
