JAKE Melksham says being in the right place at the right time has been the key to his game in recent weeks.

Melksham has not only continued to play his role with aplomb – but has kicked crucial goals, for example, against West Coast (round 22) and Hawthorn (semi-final). He said it was more about timing, rather than anything extra in his game.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” he said.

“I had a ping at the goals and it went through. [There was] no real formula there – it’s not like I’m going out each week, saving myself for the last quarter or anything. Everyone lifted in that last quarter when we had to and that’s why we’re here.

“We played them a couple of weeks ago and won, so that gives us good confidence going over there. We’re just super excited and play our brand of footy that we know stacks up really well against the top teams, and I can’t wait.”

Melksham said the belief among the group was high, as was the closeness of the group. And he was also rapt to share the journey with close mate Michael Hibberd and his family and friends.

“It’s fantastic. I’m super happy that he came to the club and we got to share this experience together. As each week’s gone by and we’ve won, it’s been even more special,” he said.

“Embracing your teammates and seeing him after the game on the field, after a win in the semi-final was just awesome and exciting. We were in a little bit of shock after the game that we had won and got into a prelim, but we’re just all taking it in our stride.”

“I’ve got my dad coming over and my partner. It’s getting quite expensive this finals campaign, paying for tickets, accommodation and flights. But it’s a unique experience and the family’s getting right behind me, as are the other players’ families.”
