MELBOURNE Grand Final player Ken Albiston recently passed away, last Wednesday on June 20.
He was 91 years old.
Albiston played in Melbourne’s 1954 Grand Final loss against Footscray at the MCG.
He made his debut for Melbourne in round one, 1952 against Geelong at the MCG and played 45 games for the red and blue from 1952-54, after notching up 58 appearances with Richmond from 1946-51.
Albiston finished runner-up in the Gardiner Medal in 1954 and played his last VFL/AFL game in the ’54 Grand Final loss.
He also won Melbourne’s seconds best and fairest award in 1954.
A rover/forward, Albiston was one of a few players from his era to kick on both feet.
His brothers Alec (Hawthorn) and Harold (Collingwood and Hawthorn) also played in the VFL/AFL.
