MELBOURNE has named Joel Smith as its nominated rookie for the rest of the season.

It means that Smith, although a rookie, is eligible for selection in the AFL for the rest of the season.

Last round, Mitch White was elevated from the rookie list to replace the injured Aaron vandenBerg (heel), who is out for the rest of the season.

Smith, who suffered a shoulder injury during his AFL debut against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium in round one this year, made his comeback to the game via the VFL last round.

He impressed with 21 disposals and eight marks.

The 21-year-old is the son of former North Melbourne and then Melbourne high-flyer Shaun Smith.
