DION Johnstone says he was “stoked” to find out his new home was at the Melbourne Football Club.

Selected at No.64 in Friday night's NAB AFL Draft in Sydney – Melbourne’s second and final pick – Johnstone said it was a moment he’ll never forget.

“I’m stoked to be at the Melbourne Football Club. I was sitting at home with my family and a handful of friends and I was sitting there not knowing whether I was going to go in the national [draft] or not,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“I was sitting there anxiously, just watching and waiting and then I was lucky enough that my name was called out.

“It was a moment that I’ll never forget with family and friends.”

Johnstone was hoping he would land in the red and blue.

“I spoke with Melbourne a week ago and I had an interview with them and I felt like it went well,” he said.

“They seemed pretty happy with me and the feedback from my manager was positive.

“I had my fingers crossed that I’d get picked up by Melbourne.”

Originally from North Warrnambool Eagles, Johnstone had two years at Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup, when he moved to Melbourne at the start of year 10.

He also played for Scotch College and captained its football team.

A dangerous inside 50 player, Johnstone is an exciting prospect with genuine flair. He is also tough and reliable and said it was a dream of his to play at the highest level.

“I’ve wanted to do it since I was running around at Auskick,” he said.

“I’ve tried to put everything together and I always hoped this day would be a dream come true.

“It’s happened, so I couldn’t be any happier.”
