Todd Viney’s season assessment
Kelvin was good as a rookie. At certain stages, we were really happy with the way he played and improved at VFL level. He played some good games and showed some lightning pace with his forward line pressure. He’s got exactly what we’re after, so he’s one to watch out for next year.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Injured: hand

VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
Kelvin was a little bit rusty, because he’d been out with a finger injury. Considering it was his first game back, he was lively around the packs and had 12 disposals. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 2 v Brisbane Lions
Kel struggled until the last quarter, when he had a couple of really good involvements. He laid a tackle, put some pressure on and flicked the ball out. He had a hand in a couple of goals and was lively for us. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Kel was much better this week. He got his pressure skills up and kicked a goal. He should’ve kicked a couple. He looked better on the drier surface and the bigger ground with a bit more space. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 4 - Bye

VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
Kelvin kicked three goals and did his job. He provided some pressure and class around the ground at times. His used the ball well with his goal kicking. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Kel struggled a bit. It was the type of day where he needed to win the ball with one touch. Instead, he paddled the ball a bit. He still chased hard, but didn’t kick any goals and for a small forward, we needed a bit more out of him. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 7 v Bendigo Bombers
Kel kicked three goals and played one of his better games for the year, which was timely. He had been a bit up and down and his position was being questioned, so he responded. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 8 - Bye

VFL: Round 9 v Williamstown
Kel went off early injured with a corkie. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 10 v Sandringham
Injured: quadriceps

VFL: Round 11 v Collingwood
Kelvin unfortunately got injured in the second quarter, again with his thigh. He did one really good individual passage that set up a goal for Lucas Cook in the first quarter. But he struggled after that. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Injured: quadriceps

VFL: Round 13 - Bye
Injured: quadriceps

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Injured: quadriceps

VFL reserves: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Kelvin was totally shocked by the conditions - remembering he’s a WA boy. That’s the coldest and wettest that he’s played in for a long time. He started OK, and then he just numbed up, I thought. He had five possessions in the first quarter, but then not much after that. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 16 v Frankston
Kel worked hard, and got through well, with three goals and 15 touches.  He cramped up in the last quarter because he worked so hard, but played well. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 17 - Bye

VFL reserves: Round 18 v Frankston
Kel had a remarkable 20 tackles and kicked a goal in our 169-point win over the Dolphins. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
Kelvin came back to the seniors after having 20 tackles in the reserves. He had 10 tackles, four chases, and had a hand in the goal scoring. He was important in the dynamics of the game, and showed himself to be a pressure forward. We knew he had that in him, and it was good to see. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
Kelvin was OK. He only had eight touches. Considering what he showed the previous round, he was disappointing. But he still managed to do some very good pressure skills. He ended up with nine team acts, which included six tackles. He needed to try and hit the scoreboard more by working harder to the fall of the contest. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
Kel was good. He started very well, with two first quarter goals. One came from a tackle and another came from chasing pressure. He didn’t have the same impact after that. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 22 v Northern Bullants
Kel produced a really consistent effort over four quarters. But he cost himself a very good rating because he kicked three behinds and one out on the full. He had nine pressure skill acts, which was excellent. Brad Gotch

VFL: Qualifying final v Port Melbourne
Kelvin’s effort was fair, as he seemed to go missing a bit. His tackling was down, as were his touches, but he did kick a neat boundary goal at the start of the second quarter. Brad Gotch
