Read Like a Demon

The Read Like a Demon program encourages students to improve their reading and writing skills, while celebrating their relationship with literacy. Please visit our Read Like a Demon Blog to post reviews, see what our players are reading and to chat with us about books at Read Like a Demon Blog.

Program highlights
- With ambassadors Colin Garland and Cale Morton leading by example, a popular part of the program takes place when students post their book reviews to the Read Like a Demon blog. Colin and Cale also write their own reviews, as well as comment on the student reviews.
- Another highlight of the program is a Skype appearance from a player. The player reads a story to the students before question and answer time.
- A writing competition is run in conjunction with the program, with the winning entry having their story illustrated and published. The Melbourne Football Club published The Chocolate Man in 2010 and The Love Story in 2011, this year the winner will be published and used as a classroom resource!

In 2011...
- 300 children directly participated in the program
- 30 schools were involved
- 30,000 + visitors found their way to the RLAD blog
- The program received recognition from the Australian Library and Information Association.

“Callum did a test and scored 8/20, this week he scored an amazing 19/20.  This is an outstanding result.  I was thrilled to bits and so was Callum when I told him. Callum’s teacher and I both believe Read Like a Demon contributed to this result. Since the program started and right up to today Callum never skips a day without reading. He reads for pleasure, not because he has to.”
– Stephanie McAuliff (Callum’s Mum)
