Only those inside Melbourne knew how tough it was going to be for the No. 1 draft pick in his first season. He was still completing VCE studies in 2009, was playing school football and did not train with the Demons on a full-time basis. The outside expectation was much greater – as it generally is with the No. 1 selection – and after a handful of games for Casey Scorpions in the VFL, Watts was unveiled in the Queen’s Birthday blockbuster against Collingwood. He was given a torrid welcome by the Magpies and after managing a further two games, went back to the VFL. However, he chipped his thumb and sat out the last six games. Has completed a solid pre-season, added muscle to his frame and should be ready to step out as a key forward.
