Bate's name was discussed during Trade Week after he expressed a desire to seek opportunities elsewhere, but the Demons didn't want to give him away. Generally a high half-forward, Bate performed well in the midfield at VFL level and can expect to rotate through there more often in 2012. Second in the Liston Medal and the Casey Scorpions’ best and fairest, his challenge is to reinvent himself in a new position.
