Melbourne president Jim Stynes has called for supporters to get to the club's first five games of the new season

INSPIRATIONAL Melbourne president Jim Stynes defied his ongoing battle with cancer to front the club's annual general meeting at the MCG on Thursday night.

In typical buoyant spirits, the Demons great put his energy into the event where the club announced a net profit of $587,183 for 2009.

However Stynes, whose illness became public last July, briefly touched on his condition when recounting part of his summer holiday.

"Given the situation I'm in, a lot of people (in the same situation), what do they do? They go off to America and go to Disneyland and take their family there. So I decided to take my little boy and girl and wife over to Disneyland," he said.

Stynes then told an amusing story of a rollercoaster ride with his four year-old son Tiernan at the theme park.

"I'm not sure if he's frightened or excited, because he was sitting in front of me and then all of a sudden you just here him screaming away and then he says, 'Now that's what I'm talking about'.

Stynes said it was the best moment of his summer.

In turning his focus to the season, Stynes urged the Melbourne faithful to make a concerted effort to attend the club's first five games, which will all be played at the MCG.

"We want to see more people at our home ground at the 'G this year," Stynes said.

"It's about putting bums on seats, being entertaining and a lot more competitive."

Stynes said the club remained committed to its long-term aim of sustained success.

"We know where we want to go and we're not going to get sidetracked," he said.
