What senior coach Peter German said
"The boys played well. We knew we were up against it, but the way the players went about it was just fantastic. It was our lowest number of Melbourne players for the season, with two listed players and three rookies."
How German rated the Melbourne listed players
Seniors
Simon Buckley – Kicks 7, Handballs 11, Marks 1, Tackles 1, Goals 1
Simon got better as the game progressed. He got more involved in the game and was involved in the clearances. He also showed he was getting over his injuries, with some good pace. Simon kicked a terrific 55-metre goal on the run and showed composure, so I look forward to him building momentum in the next few weeks.
Daniel Hughes – Kicks 12, Handballs 2, Marks 6, Tackles 6, Goals 2
'Hughesy' was good. He started off really well and was a livewire for us across half-forward. He kicked a couple and also set up a couple of goals. His work-rate offensively and defensively was excellent. What he did on the weekend was similar to a Michael Newton role. So I was really pleased with his game.
Russell Robertson – Kicks 2, Handballs 8, Marks 3, Tackles 3
He was actually marked tightly. Alex Rance was given the job on him and he was closely played. It was tough for the forwards because of the windy conditions, but he chased, tackled and put his body on the line. No doubt it's difficult for him to come back, but he'll bounce back.
Jake Spencer – Kicks 6, Handballs 2, Marks 1, Tackles 4, Goals 1
It was Jake's first game back in the seniors for quite a few weeks. He took the ruck for most of the game and did a pretty good job. We know he is still developing in his ruck work, but his mobility was good. He also laid four tackles. I thought he battled really hard and did the job required.
Trent Zomer – Kicks 3, Handballs 5, Marks 2, Tackles 3
It was one of Trent's better games. He did a few special things and kicked a goal. He also showed at times his strength and pace, so hopefully that'll be a big confidence booster for him. He played forward, back and laid some good tackles and got involved, so I was really pleased he made a contribution.
Reserves
Tom McNamara – He was solid. Tom played about 70 per cent of the game, but the most important thing was that he got through the game. He got through with some injuries, was sharp and good with his hands. He's a chance to come up and play VFL senior footy next week.
