What the senior coach said … with Peter German
"In terrible conditions and with it blowing a gale – Casey and Frankston games are windy games – we had to make the most of our chances, which we did. Our third quarter was fantastic and we held them to two points, which set up the win."
How German rated the Melbourne listed players
Seniors
Rohan Bail – Rohan had been a little bit off over the last few weeks, but I thought his ball-handling and willingness at the ball was very good. He gave us some very good play from half-back/wing. We saw a side of his game we haven't seen so far this year.
Clint Bartram – Clint was probably our best player on the day. He had 32 possessions and nine tackles. He was right in among the clearances and kicked a goal. Clint was very effective on the day, and his form has been good over the past three or four weeks.
Kyle Cheney – Kyle regained some form, which he had in the first half of the season. He played in defence and was more physical this week. His game was more robust and his ball-handling was a lot better. But there is still room for his improvement.
Daniel Hughes – 'Hughesy' was good. He played up the ground and had varied roles. His marking and pressure was good and I thought it was one of his better games in recent weeks, so I was pleased with Danny's efforts.
Paul Johnson – 'Johnno' was good. He dominated the ruck and had 50-odd tap outs. He gave Bartram and Jordie McKenzie first look at the ball. 'Johnno' also had 18 possessions and his past two games have been very consistent over the four quarters.
Jordie McKenzie – Jordie had a slow first half, but a really impressive second half, where he was among our best He was really good around the stoppages and was clean with his ball-handling. His tackling was good in the conditions. He continues to improve.
Brad Miller – He was good with 4.2. Brad took six marks, but it wasn't a really good day for the forwards. He continually gave us something up in the forward line and gave us something to crumb off. In the conditions, he was quite effective.
Michael Newton – He was good again, with 22 possessions and four goals up forward. Michael has been really consistent this year and at some stage hopefully the door will open for him at AFL level. His work-rate has been outstanding for Casey this year.
Shane Valenti – He was very good. The conditions suited him and with 128 stoppages for the game, Shane was always in there. If he wasn't laying a tackle, he was getting tackled himself. He ended up getting a bit of a corky and didn't play the last quarter.
Jack Watts – After a week off, he was very good with 24 disposals. He kicked the ball well, his awareness and ball-use was good. He kicked a real opportunist goal, crumbing and then snapping. We were pleased with his performance.
Matthew Whelan – Matty was very good. He was rock solid and was one of our better players with 27 touches. He was really composed and used the ball well. He was strong and made clear decisions. Matty also pushed forward late and kicked a goal.
Reserves
Trent Zomer – Trent played forward and ruck and kicked a couple of goals. His form over the past couple of weeks has been very good. He's actually performed really strongly, so that's what we're looking for. He was one of our better players.
