SPECTATORS are being advised to arrive early to Friday night’s Elimination Final between Melbourne and Geelong, with a large crowd expected at the MCG.

The clash is now anticipated to draw a crowd of more than 90,000 people, while two major events in the area – an NRL final at AAMI Park and a concert at Margaret Court Arena – will also add to the precinct traffic.

With MCG gates opening at 5.30pm, and MCC members having access from 5pm, the MCC is urging fans to allow plenty of time in getting to the ground.

“We want to have everyone inside the stadium before the first bounce, however that is reliant on fans allowing enough time and getting to the ground early,” MCC CEO Stuart Fox told Melbourne Media.

“Fans should aim to be in their seats at least an hour before the game start time.

“With a crowd of more than 90,000 forecast we are urging people to arrive earlier than usual or risk missing out on the action.”

Entry processes, from bag checks to wanding, won’t be compromised, with patrons strongly encouraged to leave unnecessary bags at home, and be patient and cooperative with security staff.

Taking further security measures, there will also be no public parking in Yarra Park.

“As has been the case with a number of blockbuster games this year, there will be no public car parking in Yarra Park, and limited spaces available for disability permit holders,” Fox said.

“Combined with road closures and peak hour traffic, our strong advice to fans is therefore to catch public transport.

“For those who can’t avoid driving we recommend you plan ahead and consider parking in the city or an area near to the ground; then walk or catch public transport to the stadium itself.”

Brunton Avenue will be closed to traffic from 4.50pm-11.20pm, while Jolimont Street and Jolimont Terrace will be closed to traffic from 4.50pm-11.20pm – except for vehicles dropping off mobility-impaired patrons.

Wellington Parade will also be closed to traffic after the match, until safe patron egress is complete.
