WHO will do the coin toss? And the pre-match speech?

According to new co-captain Jack Viney, who joins Nathan Jones in the position, they will alternate duties throughout the season.

But just who does which role for Saturday’s season opener against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium remains to be seen.

“I think I’m one from two in the coin toss [during the JLT Community Series], but I’ll have a chat to Chunk (Jones) and work out who wants to do the toss and who wants to do the pre-match speech,” Viney told Melbourne TV.

Viney said it could come down to a ‘rock, papers, scissors’ scenario.

“Something like that – we’ll have to work out something,” he said with a grin.

“Once we work out who’s doing it first, we’ll rotate it throughout the year – it’ll be a pretty simple solution.”

The reigning Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy winner said he was “really excited for it to all kick off” this weekend.

“I’m glad the JLT stuff is over with,” he said.

“I want to see a bit more passion now after a good goal, [because] you’re not allowed to celebrate and it’s frowned upon in JLT, but now it’s the real stuff, I’m looking forward to seeing some real passion.

“That’s what’s getting me really excited for Saturday’s game.”

Viney said the clash against the Saints was a great first up test for his side.

“It’s a big game. Not only is it round one, but we’re coming up against one of our bogey teams that we haven’t had a lot of success against,” he said.

“[We haven’t beaten] St Kilda recently or a long time, but I think it provides a really good opportunity to prove ourselves and make a big statement early.

“We want to focus on our brand of football and we know what’s required at the right times and then we've got to execute it on Saturday.”

With Viney and his father Todd (who led Melbourne in 1998-99) set to become the first father/son combination to captain the club, Jack said it had been a “pretty normal” week between him and his dad – despite the achievement.

“We talk footy all of the time and it’s been pretty casual and pretty normal – nothing too different,” he said.

“We haven’t spoken about what the leadership looks like and it’s not going to change too much from what I was doing in the JLT Series.

“It’ll be the same process between me and Nathan – I’ve had a few games to really nail the pre-game speeches, but there won’t be a heap of change for round one, in terms of my leadership and captaincy.”

Overall, Viney said his team was feeling fresh and ready to go in round one.

“We had last weekend off, so the guys were able to get away for a couple of days and catch up with family before the season kicks off,” he said.

“It was a really strong pre-season for us, including the JLT Series. We felt like we put together some really strong performances, although we probably dropped off a bit in the West Coast game.

“That gave us really strong reviews throughout the week and clear messaging for this week.”
