LAURA ‘Irish’ Corrigan says it’s an honour to become the first Irish female player to be recruited by Melbourne.

Corrigan said she was fully aware of the late, great Jim Stynes’ story and added that she would love to wear his No.11 jumper.

“Back home, he was well renowned and we all knew the legend that he was,” she told melbournefc.com.au.

“So I know Jim’s story and legacy and I was here [in Australia] when he got sick and everything happen. I knew about him winning the Brownlow Medal and him being an amazing player and what he did at Reach.

“The fact that I’m going to have the opportunity to be the first Irish female to play for Melbourne and possibly – or hopefully – wear his number would be a dream come true.

Corrigan said she had also made contact with Stynes’ brothers though Gaelic football.

“I’ve actually met his brother, David. I played for Ireland in the International Cup – two years ago and four years ago. Two years ago, I was vice-captain and David played and coached the men’s team.

“Two weeks ago, when I was in Brisbane playing Gaelic footy, his other brother Brian was up there coaching the Gaelic footy minors from Victoria. Brian’s son was playing.

“It was pretty successful and a great opportunity. I was lucky enough to be co-captain and named All-Australian. I love Gaelic footy, but it’s more of a hobby.

“It’s not as competitive out here, because there are only four teams in Victoria, so we try to play interstate a bit. It’s a great way for me to keep an Irish connection.”
