HE ARRIVED at the club last Friday, but ruckman Mitch King, who was Melbourne’s third pick (No.42 overall) in last Tuesday night’s NAB AFL Draft, has already earned a new nickname: ‘Prince’.

Given he is the second M.King at the club – behind another 200cm tall ruckman/forward from the Murray Bushrangers named Max King – the recruit has earned a new title, as he explained.

“I’m no relation to Max, but I know him from the Bushrangers, when I was there as an under-16 [player] and that was his draft year,” Mitch King told Dee TV.

“I know Max and he’s a great bloke and there have been a fair few jokes around the club [already] about how two M.King’s are going to work.

“They’ve started calling me ‘Prince’, so we’ll see how that goes.”

King, who hails from Wodonga, missed the 2014 season and the start of 2015, after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. But he bounced back to play 10 matches with the Bushrangers this year.

The former state junior basketballer said it had been a pretty big few days moving from the Victorian border to the city.

“I had school graduation Thursday night and then I had to head down on Friday morning,” he said.

“I got to the club and moved in with my host family and got everything set up at the club and back at the house I’m staying at.”

King said the city traffic was going to take some adjusting.

“It’s been tough in the traffic actually, but I’ve come down to Melbourne here and there, so I half know my way around. But it’s a pretty big move for me, and Mum and Dad will be missing me a bit,” he said.

“It’s great though and I can’t think of a better place to be than the Melbourne footy club.”

In terms of how he described himself as a player, King said: “I’m an athletic ruckman who uses my jump and leap in the ruck a lot.”

“I try to move forward and snag a mark here and there, and just try to use my athleticism to run around the ground a fair bit,” he said.
