TENACIOUS defender Neville Jetta says Melbourne’s ability to end its losing streak against Collingwood, dating back to round 11, 2007, was one of the most pleasing aspects of its 37-point win at the MCG on Saturday.

Aside from a draw against Collingwood in round 12, 2010, Melbourne has lost 10 of its previous 11 encounters against the Pies. Jetta said it was a fantastic feeling to finally break the drought.

“We haven’t beaten them since 2007, so it always good to win against the Pies,” he told Dee TV.

“We faced them six weeks ago now, so we had a good handle on how to play them. With no [Travis] Cloke and a few other players not in their team now, we went in thinking we had an advantage with the way we play.

“All we had to do was come out and play that style for four quarters and I thought we did that today (Saturday). Like all teams, they fought back, but we held our own out there, and it was good to see all boys putting in for the four quarters.”

Jetta said he was confident the Demons could win the game, although they led by just eight points entering the final change.

“Over the last few weeks, we’ve had some really bad third quarters, where teams have really run over us,” he said.

“It was just about being relaxed and composed and playing our style. I felt like we did that. They did get a couple of goals, but we just remained relaxed and kept talking to each other and kept believing. It definitely showed, the boys held on and the belief grew in the last quarter.”

Jetta, who had 16 disposals, including 10 contested, was an important performer in the win and said it was “probably one of my better games” for the season.

“It was just about getting over and helping teammates, and trying to work as a unit,” he said.

“I was just a small part in a whole team performance and if everyone players their part like we did today (Saturday), we will win more often than not.

“It was just great to play my part.”
