HARD-nut Jack Viney says there was no other way to describe Melbourne’s 37-point loss to St Kilda at the MCG on Sunday, other than to say it was a “very disappointing” performance.

Viney said St Kilda simply beat Melbourne at its own game.

“We lost the contested possession and they out tackled us today, and they did what we wanted to do and they did it better than us,” he told Dee TV.

“That’s what we’re building our game plan off and when they do it better than us, it puts us in a good position to score. Full credit to St Kilda, they were fantastic with their defence and they put plenty of pressure on us.

“We turned it into a handballing game and we felt like we over possessed the footy for a lot of the day, which got us into trouble.

“They were on today, but we’ll take what we can out of it and go to work tomorrow and go to our review.”

Viney, who was Melbourne’s best with 31 disposals against St Kilda star Jack Steven (16 possessions), said it was a frustrating effort by his team, given the evenness of the two sides.

“St Kilda is a club around where we are at, and where we’re sitting, in terms of where the list and the ladder positioning,” he said.

“You’ve got to win if you want to start climbing the ladder and start being a good team – they’re the games you have to win.

“It’s certainly disappointing, but we’ll go to work tomorrow and go through the review and look to get better and try and win next week.”
