First quarter: Melbourne 2.4.16 to West Coast 5.4.34

West Coast opened the scoring with a goal to Luke Shuey but Melbourne soon responded, with Dom Tyson and Chris Dawes kicking the next two goals to give the Demons an early lead.

But from there it was largely all West Coast, with the Eagles taking the lead through Jack Darling and maintaining their advantage for the remainder of the quarter.

Melbourne was unable to convert its forays inside 50, with Jesse Hogan kicking two behinds and the Eagles defence managing to rush through two more efforts.

Darling’s second goal, along with majors from Josh Hill and Dom Sheed, was enough to  give the Eagles an 18-point lead at the first break.

Second quarter: Melbourne 5.5.35 – West Coast 7.8.50
 
After Jeff Garlett missed a set shot, Dawes got the second quarter off to the ideal start, kicking a goal after receiving a free kick for holding.

West Coast quickly hit back, with Callum Sinclair goaling from the square.

Jack Viney worked hard to create the Demons’ second goal for the quarter, crumbing the ball and evading Eagles ruck Nic Naitanui to snap truly.

Eagles big man Josh Kennedy responded at the other end from close-range, kicking his first for the match.

Having been subbed on for Angus Brayshaw earlier in the match, Alex Neal-Bullen snared a much-needed goal to keep Melbourne within three goals at half time.

Third quarter: Melbourne 8.6.54 – West Coast Eagles 10.14.74

West Coast shut down hopes for an early Melbourne goal when Kennedy converted from a free kick.

But the Demons responded, with goals to Neal-Bullen and Jake Spencer cutting the margin to 12 points.

West Coast immediately hit back, with Jamie Cripps goaling from a free kick and Darling extending the lead to 25 points shortly after.

But Jeff Garlett stepped in, applying an excellent tackle in Melbourne’s forward line before following up to kick the goal and keep Melbourne within four goals.

Fourth quarter: Melbourne 9.6.60 defeated by West Coast Eagles 16.8.114.
 
Jack Darling gave the Eagles a boost at the start of the final term, kicking two early goals to extend their lead to 32.
From there, it was all West Coast.

Mark LeCras goaled from a set shot, before two rapid-fire goals from Luke Shuey and Jamie Cripps extended the Eagles’ lead to 54.

Melbourne’s sole goal for the fourth quarter came through Jesse Hogan.

Jeff Garlett streamed out of the centre, and found Hogan, who took a strong contested mark. and the young forward converted for his first goal of the night.

Jeremy McGovern then kicked a booming set shot goal from outside 50 to push the lead back out to 54, the final margin.
