MELBOURNE has released its 2015 Indigenous Guernsey ahead of its round nine match against Port Adelaide.

Similar to the 2014 version, the Indigenous Guernsey features the artwork of Nyirripi artist Ursula Napangardi Hudson.

“The main design is the same as last year – it’s based on the Pikilyi waterhole [out past] Alice Springs which is very significant to the Nyrirripi people,” Neville Jetta told melbournefc.com.au.

“This year, we’ve also got the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags on the guernsey.”

The 2015 guernsey also features the surnames of all past and present Indigenous players of the Melbourne Football Club.

“Obviously I’ve got an Indigenous background and this is about representing the past players – from when things used to be a lot harder if you were Indigenous, both on and off the field,” Jetta said.

“They stood up for us and now I’m here to try and do the same as what they did – not just for my family and my community but the whole Indigenous community.”

Jetta said he was looking forward to potentially wearing the guernsey alongside Jeff Garlett in the AFL’s Indigenous Round.

“I’m just proud to run out,” he said.

“Especially with Jeffy (Garlett) playing here now,  I get to share that [game] with another Indigenous person.”

Garlett said he was looking forward to wearing Melbourne’s Indigenous Guernsey for the first time.

“It’s an awesome jumper, I’m very honoured to wear this jumper, especially with the design behind it,” he said.

“I feel very privileged to wear a jumper with all the past and present players on it – it feels pretty good to wear it.”

The player-issue guernseys will be auctioned, with a percentage of the proceeds going towards trachoma awareness and prevention. The auction can be viewed here.

The guernsey can also be purchased at The Demon Shop (without the Aboriginal Flag and Torres Strait Islander Flag) here.
