Second quarter: Melbourne 7.5 (47) to Western Bulldogs 3.9 (27)

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter, when Mitch Wallis opened the term, but it proved to be their only major for the period.

But the Demons responded strongly, booting four consecutive majors, courtesy of Ben Newton, Hogan (who booted his second) and Jeremy Howe, who took a customary hanger before converting, and skipper Nathan Jones.

Melbourne entered the main break with a 20-point lead.

Third quarter: Melbourne 10.10 (70) to Western Bulldogs 8.9 (57)

The Demons made it six consecutive majors, after Pedersen booted his second and Hogan kicked his third to start the second half.

Melbourne led by 33 points at the six-minute mark, before the Bulldogs came back with five of the next six goals.

Matt Jones was the Melbourne’s only other goalkicker for the rest of the quarter, as the Demons took a 13-point lead into the final change.
