MELBOURNE’S round six match against Sydney Swans will see the MCG turned pink for the annual Pink Lady Match.

The game will take place on Saturday May 9 as part of the Mother’s Day weekend, with those in attendance encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

BCNA CEO Christine Nolan said the Pink Lady Match was an opportunity for visitors to celebrate their mothers while also showing support for the organisation.

“For the first time, the iconic MCG will glow pink on both the inside and outside of the stadium in support of the one in eight Australian women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” Nolan said.

“We hope that the Pink Lady Match will be a spectacular event in Melbourne’s sporting calendar, bringing families together to say thank you to their mums, while raising awareness and funds for BCNA.”

There will be special pre-match entertainment on the day, followed by a moment of silence to acknowledge those touched by breast cancer.

As part of the event, there will also be a mass planting of Pink Lady silhouettes outside the MCG.

Visitors will be encouraged to write their own personal message on a silhouette to show their support to someone diagnosed with breast cancer, or to pay tribute to a loved one to have passed away.

Before the match, 300 mothers will also receive the opportunity to run through a special pre-game banner and complete a lap of honour around the MCG.

Melbourne officially launched the Pink Lady Match at its 2015 Melbourne Pink Lady Breakfast on Tuesday.

Coach Paul Roos, players Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove and women’s team players Daisy Pearce and Melissa Hickey were among those to attend the event, along with AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan.

The event keynote speaker was BCNA and Reserve Bank of Australia board member and breast cancer survivor Kathryn Fagg, while Roos was also among the speakers on the day.
