SENIOR assistant coach Simon Goodwin says no limits have been placed on the 2015 Melbourne squad.

Goodwin said it was hard to know exactly how the club will fare this year, but he was excited about what this season could also bring.

“We’re really not putting any limits on the group,” he told Dee TV.

“We want to play a good brand of footy that consistently stands up against all teams and I feel really confident that we’re in a position to do that. How many wins that translates into – I don’t know.

“But I’m looking forward to finding out.”

Goodwin acknowledged Melbourne’s NAB Challenge campaign had been up and down, but he said there was still plenty to like.

“We were probably a little bit more inconsistent than what we would’ve liked,” he said.

“Our good was very good and some of our quarters were very poor, so the challenge for us as a group is to really bridge that gap.

“Slowly it’s coming around that our gap is reducing between our good and our bad, and we are going to see some more consistent performances. And with that will hopefully come some more wins and some real confidence for the team.”

Goodwin, who will succeed Paul Roos as senior coach after the 2016 season, said his role was continually developing, but come game day, he has a clear focus.

“My focus game day is on our transition running – defensively and offensively – but really making sure that the patterns offensively are enabling us to take the ball to where we want to take it, and hopefully [we’ll] play an exciting brand of footy,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to it. The first three games of the NAB Challenge have been pretty good in the box.

“We’ve had some really good discussion.”

Looking ahead to Melbourne’s season-opener against the Gold Coast Suns at the MCG on Saturday, April 4, Goodwin said he was confident the Demons would provide a strong effort.

“I’m expecting us to put on a really consistent four quarter performance – something we’ve been working towards all year,” he said.

“[We want] to put on a brand that is competitive and has a little bit more ball movement to it.

“It’s based on contest and defence, and it’s something hopefully our fans will come along and watch and say ‘the Melbourne footy club is heading in the right direction’.

“I think this is our first opportunity to really lay that brand out there and show the people of Melbourne that we have taken some steps forward over the summer.”
