COACH Paul Roos has thrown his support behind the proposed Melbourne and Richmond clash on Anzac Day eve, from next year.

Roos said it was fitting for Melbourne to be involved in such a match, given the club’s strong links to those who have served at war. Melbourne lost 32 players during wartime, more than any other VFL/AFL club.

“The round itself is designed to reflect on the past and the history of Australia and the incredible sacrifices people make,” Roos said.

“Melbourne and Richmond just want to be part of that and are putting that to the forefront of an amazing round and we certainly don’t want to take away from the teams that have got that day.

“Melbourne has lost the most players in war time, so there is a significant link.”

Meanwhile, Roos was also in favour of the International Rules Series continuing, but he questioned the timing.

“I played myself and it’s a great experience. I’m a little bit surprised by the timing of it and when it’s going to be played in relation to what the players’ association allow their players to do with the clubs,” he said.

“My understanding would be that they’re maybe playing in the International Rules, but the clubs wouldn’t be able to have access to them in that period, so I find that a little bit strange – just on the basis of what the players’ association have set up for their constitutes. So that’s probably the only thing I find a bit strange.

“But I enjoy it as a coach and I enjoyed it as a player – I think it’s quite significant for the players to have done it and they get a chance to associate with great players and train with great players and see how they prepare. So as a concept, I’m 100 per cent behind it.”
