YOUNG-gun Jack Viney says his form is getting better each week, after an interrupted pre-season.

Viney, who was one of Melbourne’s best with 24 disposals against the Gold Coast Suns at the MCG on Sunday, said he was growing in confidence each week, since returning from injury in round three.

“I feel like I’ve built on every game. I had a pretty slow start against GWS, then I had a better game against Carlton and I felt like that was my best game of the year [against the Suns],” he told Dee TV.

“I felt like I was competitive inside, and I got a goal in the last quarter when it counted, but their mids had really good games as well. And we’ve really got to be accountable.

“I had a good game myself, but then [I’ve got to] limit my opposition [in] their disposals. I’m happy with it, but there’s always room to improve.”

Viney said it was a free-flowing game and a shoot out in the final term, but added that it was an “extremely disappointing” loss as Melbourne got close to victory.

“It was a game we definitely should’ve won, but because we made so many mistakes and poor choices, we ended up losing by eight points and it cost us,” he said.

“There’s stuff to work on, but we’ve got to be a consistently good team and we’ve got to win those games that we deserve to win.”

“They had a bit of a head start and we couldn’t catch them in the end,” he said.

Looking ahead to round six, Viney said Melbourne’s opponent next Saturday night at the MCG – the Sydney Swans – was a winnable match.

“The Swans haven’t had an ideal start to the season as well, so they’ll be quite vulnerable, but it’ll be another opportunity for a win,” he said.

“I think the boys will come firing, considering how close we came today and I felt like we could’ve won, so we want to back it up next week and get the four points.”
