COACH Mark Neeld has praised the efforts of Jack Watts, who returned to the forward line in the second half and kicked two goals against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday.

Watts, who has predominantly played down back under Neeld, started the first half in defence, before he bobbed up with a couple late in the third term.

“Jack’s a talent, who’s still finding his way in footy,” he said.

“He hasn’t cracked the 60 game mark yet and he got a few shots at goal, which was good.

“He had nine marks and he’s a good player. He showed his versatility today, and I also thought he was pretty good in the back half in the first half of the game.

“It was a good output from Jack.”

Watts finished with 16 disposals and nine marks. His disposal efficiency was 94 per cent.

Reflecting on Melbourne’s 28 point loss to the Lions, Neeld was pleased with his side’s ability to kick its best score away from the MCG under his tutelage.

“I think it’s going to be three times for the year where we’ll go out with a more experienced side,” he said.

“To kick 14 goals against the Lions – they’re a good side, particularly up here – we thought was a pretty good game.”
