Todd Viney’s season assessment
Brad had an inconsistent year. Greeny didn’t reach the heights from the year before. He played more as a forward this year, rather than spending time in the midfield and up forward. He still kicked 37 goals.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Brad was courageous in his first game as captain. He played multiple positions again and not surprisingly made an impact.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Greeny featured in some good passages of play, but we needed some more defensive pressure from him and for it to increase.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Greeny’s effort was outstanding. He continually attacked the ball and his movement around the forward line was very good. He also laid some important tackles.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Greeny attacked the ball all day. He kept presenting and moved around the forward line strongly. But he didn’t reward himself - he finished with 2.4 - despite his hard work. He achieved a milestone by reaching his 300th career goal.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Brad continued to work hard and put himself in the right spots. He didn’t have the impact he would’ve liked, but as with all true champions, he continued to work at the little things. He knows he will get his form to where he wants it. An exciting game won’t be far away.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Brad led from the front with his physicality and involvement in the game. He used the ball intelligently and directed his players with spirit and passion. It was just great to see him play so well after some frustrations in recent weeks.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Greeny played a solid game. He wasn’t outstanding and he did some pretty good things in important parts of the game. He needed to keep driving other players to perform and make sure he focused on his individual game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Brad did a great job on Nick Dal Santo and stuck to the task all day to take the points in the end. The clincher was his two goals. It is great to see Greeny get some reward for his persistence and hard work. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Brad had an even game, without being outstanding. His physicality was good and he finished the game with seven tackles. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Brad led from the front. With all of the stuff that had gone on the previous week, he led by his actions and set the tone of the game. He also kicked four goals and competed tenaciously when the ball was in his area. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Brad couldn’t get into space and couldn’t get a clear run at the ball, because of the close checking from the Collingwood defenders. He missed a couple of scoring opportunities he would have usually kicked. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Brad led from the front with five goals, four behinds. His contesting one-on-one was outstanding, as was his forward pressure. He continued to drive his teammates through his actions. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Brad was outstanding, especially early in the game. He helped set the win up with three goals. Greeny also presented intelligently, and his pressure when the ball hit the ground was terrific. He regularly hit the scoreboard and was settled back in the forward line. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Brad was involved up the ground early where he won several contested balls. He tackled well but couldn’t find space to present on the lead, and had no impact on the scoreboard. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Brad provided a good target early. He got involved when he went up the ground, and he contested well in the air and on the ground. A couple of quick goals helped the team to keep momentum in the third quarter. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Although Brad kicked four goals, he was in and out of the game. He provided a very good target for us to use one-on-one, but he wasn’t able to take all of his marks and convert some of the good work. He continued to grow in his leadership and direction, both on and off the ground. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Brad didn’t have much impact on the game at all. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Greeny didn’t involve himself in the game enough. We just need more from our leaders, and Brad needed to continue to lead with his involvement and with his voice on the ground. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Injured: ill

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Greeny was our sub, after he missed the previous week. He came on the ground and made an immediate impact. He got split on his opponent and was unfortunate not to have registered a couple more goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Brad worked his way into the game. He was spoilt on leads early when marking on his chest. He had five contested marks and also kicked four important goals in a strong display. It was great to see Brad find some space and have a big impact on the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Greeny’s movement around the forward line was good. He provided a good target for his teammates inside 50, and finished with two goals. He continued to lead from the front with his actions and efforts. Mark Williams
