THE STORIES of the club are attached in many and various ways to its people, bringing memories of games and people and times past, a spark of treasured recollection that is part of belonging to the red and blue tribe.

Wednesday’s story about the sad passing of Frank Hanna had particular resonance for one Melbourne member, particularly with the mention of Hanna’s run in with Jack Dyer.

Kevin Steele was just six or seven at the time.

As he wrote yesterday, ‘I can only recall the stoppage that occurred at the incident, but little else of it.’

However, his father - and football storytelling in general - remembered more of the details, and the story that made it part of the game’s heritage.

As Hanna left the ground, Don Cordner, using his doctoring skills, checked Hanna.

He then solemnly covered his face with the blanket, saying to the protagonist Jack Dyer, ‘I think you might have killed him, Jack!’

In future seasons, Cordner would greet the story with a smile and raise of the eyebrow, while the episode went into ‘Captain Blood’ legend status.

And with that, it went into legend status for Kevin Steele, and became a story to share through the generations of support and Melbourne belonging.
